Blocked Sewers & Sewer Inspections Sydney

You might have heard of the term ‘sewer chokes’? This has to do with blocked sewers and is where your wastewater pipe from your toilet is blocked by an obstruction. Professional sewer inspections using a sewer camera will locate the obstruction for you, which is usually tree roots growing into the pipes or an object that shouldn’t have been flushed.

Why do tree roots cause blocked sewers?

Trees might look beautiful and they are essential to a healthy environment, but they can cause big problems with your sewer pipes. Sewer cleaning with regular inspections of the pipes are vital if you have lots of trees growing in your yard, because trees like the loose soil and backfill around pipes. Any breaks in the pipes give tree roots an easy entry and then they just proliferate in your sewer pipes, causing blockages.

Using a sewer inspection camera, we can locate any breaks or roots in your pipes, but prevention is always the best strategy. So avoid planting trees within 3 meters of your sewer lines, particularly Fig Trees, Rubber Plants, Poplars, large Gum Trees, Jacarandas and Casuarinas.

Why do foreign objects cause blocked sewers?

Sewer cleaning is a nasty job and some things just shouldn’t be flushed down toilets. Items such as feminine hygiene products and personal wipes for instance, can be discarded safely elsewhere. Other items such as shoes, toys, cotton balls, paper towels, disposable nappies and cat litter, as well as oil, grease and fats should not be flushed down the toilet.

The best way to locate the cause of your sewer blockage is for us to use a sewer camera, so we can visualise the problem and identify its location in your pipes.

What to do if you have a blocked sewer

Your first port of call is a plumber who can locate the blockage using a sewer camera. If the blockage is on your private land, then you are responsible for the costs of fixing the problem. On the other hand, if the blockage is on council owned land, then the council may pay all or some of the costs.
